Is the Name “Thrown Away Christians" Insulting?

July 3, 2017

I guess when you think about it having the name of “Thrown Away Christians” for a ministry can seem insulting.  First, it is not pleasant to consider yourself as being thrown away from anything – especially from a church family.  Particularly when you haven’t done anything wrong and it has all happened because of church politics, someone trying to cover up their own sins and lies, or when someone starts to lose their power hold over you.  The bible states: “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (English Standard Version, Romans 15:5-7).

Second, it could be looked upon as an insult to those Church-going Christians who have never experienced the shame of being thrown away by the church friends and leaders.  I can also understand how some church leaders and pastors could take offence to this. But on the other hand… it is some of these who are responsible for throwing some Christians away…  This ministry does not intend to insult anyone or any group.  But, being a person who has never had the talent of sugar-coating words, I want this ministry to be about truth, and sometimes truth will offend people.  This is not a vendetta ministry.

So many Christians do not take the time to open their eyes to see what is happening around them at church – so many things go right past them.  Other church members may see what is happening but have their initial perception changed by lies of leadership.  Sad but true.  But what I have a hard time understanding are the members who know exactly what is happening, they know it is wrong, they know someone is being damaged, yet they believe that the pastor has the final say in everything.  Many are intimidated by their pastors or perhaps they take 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 so literally that they fail to understand the verses before it and after it.  They also do not remember I Timothy 5:20, “But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning” (New International Bible).

Another reason I have discovered that people will blindly follow their pastors and leadership is because they believe them to be anointed by God.  Well, it is true, if they accepted Jesus as their Savior, then they are anointed. . So the pastors absolutely are anointed – but they still can do wrong.  You have to also remember that not only is the pastor anointed, everyone who has been born again is anointed (take a look at 1 John 2:20 and 2:27).

There is a third reason that the name “Thrown Away Christians” could be seen as an embarrassment to all of us, and that is because it gives the non-Christians who have always been critical of Christianity fuel to protest Christianity all the more.  They can laugh at us.

I guess there’s a problem here that needs to be closely looked at.  The first problem is that there is real damage and abuse being caused to Christians by other Christians in the church (and I am not talking about petty problems that make some people leave the church).  Part of this problem is that truth must be told and many thrown away Christians need to heal.

The second problem is that there are Church leaders who are dishonest, unchristian, manipulative, and unrepentant.  They don’t want the truth to be told because it will show that they are not the type of leaders God has called. The best image that can come out of these severe problems is repentance and forgiveness which will result in unity and closer bonds.  That is what Jesus wants.  But when human arrogance is involved and will not be put aside then unity cannot happen.

The third aspect of this is that if the truth is held at bay and not told – non-Christians cannot criticize us for it.  But…if the truth isn’t told, the corruptness stays where it is and continues to hurt innocent people, and the victim cannot heal.

As for myself, I vote for the truth to be told in order to solve these problems – even if we get laughed at by the non-Christians.  Galatians 4:16 states, “Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?” (NIV).
